Winter is at hand and everyone is curled up, all warm and cosy. It's a time of conclusion but also preparation. In Gardenville, we cut back trees, prune hedges and move flowerpots into storage. Once the temperatures start to drop, it’s time for your tools to get the attention they deserve in the form of cleaning, maintenance and even repairs where necessary. GARDENA has some tips to share for winter tool care.

1. Give the tools a bathy-tubby scrub

Gardeners should set aside some time to give their pruners, shovels, rakes and other hand-held tools a proper once-over before they put them away for the winter. Spades may still be covered in soil from summer gardening, and there may still be sap on your pruner blades. The first step is to wash them with warm water and a brush.

Once hobby gardeners have cleaned their tools with water, it is essential that they rub them dry. Metal parts should be sprayed with special spray to prevent rust, and blades should be checkedto see if they need sharpening. Once they are clean, dry and sharpened, your tools can be packed away for their well-earned rest.

2. Irrigation systems in hibernation

Rain water tanks and watering cans should be completely emptied prior to the first frost. Otherwise, they may burst. Hobby gardeners should also run pumps, hoses, sprayers and sprinklers completely empty, and then store them in a dry place protected against frost.

Outside taps and water pipes exposed to cold night-time temperatures should be shut off over the main tap and bled off. In this way, frozen water cannot damage or destroy them. Luckily, GARDENA products are equipped with built-in frost protection, so it’s not the end of the world if anything is forgotten outside.

3. Lawn mowers on approved sabbatical

When temperatures become frosty, the mowing schedule is cancelled. This leaves plenty of time to tend to a mower so that it is ready to get back to work once spring has sprung. Usethe GARDENA maintenance and cleaning set for robotic mowers and tick off the following tasks in no time:

  • Wash the robotic mower and charging station with a hose and brush.
  • Clean the blade disc, check the blade and replace it if necessary.
  • Preserve the battery for winter by charging up the robotic mower to full capacity and removing it from the charging station.
  • Dry off the robotic mower, charging station and power pack once clean and store them all in a frost-proof location

4. Long term relationship with cleaning and repairs

As a rule of thumb, garden tools should be inspected at the beginning and end of every gardening season. High quality manufacture, but also proper care by owners, ensure long use of the products and support resource-saving gardening.

If one part of a tool does end up pretty worn after heavy outdoor usage, our extensive range of spare parts allows gardeners to replace it in the comfort of their own home in no time.

When it comes to trickier problems, the GARDENA repair team can work their magic to help you fix your tools rather than replace themat the first sign of a problem. This is a win for the environment and your bank balance!
